RIDER AND TEAM NEWS
- PEZ Fan Provides “Appropriate” Pronouncuation of Jonas Vingegaaard’s title
In a latest version of EUROTrash, Mike provided a number of suggestions from the armchair on how you can appropriately pronounce Jonas Vingegaard’s title. The proper strategy to say it has been a thriller to many people non-Europeans ever since he began profitable races. And one factor that’s painful about watching the North American race protection and our “personal” announcers, is how badly they butcher the pronunciation of riders’ names – and this from guys who usually have been high stage Eiro execs themselves. It’s embarrassing, and hurts my ears.
So within the spirit of free speech, even us right here at PEZ will not be above public scrutiny and if wanted – correction. So writes PEZ Fan Mike S. from Alaska:
Pricey Pez of us,
I disagree with Mike Charge’s remark within the Sep 15 Eurotrash. He wrote:
“Tip #3: It’s OK to say “Vingego.” You’re making an attempt. You’re getting shut.”
I disagree. You’re NOT getting shut. You’re mimicking Bob Roll and different People. There’s NO “oh” sound wherever in Jonas’ final title.
Through the 2024 TdF broadcasts by NBC Sports activities, perhaps in stage 6, somebody particularly requested Jonas to say his final title. I’ve connected an mp3 file of that. Do you hear an “oh” sound on the finish of his title? I don’t.
My feeling is that when you actually wished to get shut, say the final syllable like -“guar(d)” with a really tender ending “d”. Vin-ge-GO is NOT shut.
Hear Jonas Vingegaard pronounce his personal title (we assume he’s doing it appropriately.)
Bob Roll and everybody else on the NBC TdF crew saying “Vin-ge-GO” drives me up the wall. I hate it. Lazy, sloppy, intentional, disrespectful, undoubtedly not making an attempt? It’s a comparatively small variety of names that could be onerous for some English audio system. These supposed professionals ought to be capable of get these proper with a bit observe. After listening to the clip with Jonas announcing his title, Phil Liggett did notice and say, perhaps he was announcing the title incorrect. However, in that broadcast crowd the place everybody else is saying Vin-ge-GO, Phil shortly capitulated and fell again to going together with the group.
